Carroll moved with his parents from Smith Co., TN to White Co., IL when he was about ten years old. Carroll bought 40 acres of land for $1.25 per acre in White Co., IL on 14 Aug 1838. When the 1850 Census was taken, "Carrel" owned real estate valued at $200. In the late 1850s Carroll suffered health problems. He never fully regained his strength. A friend who had gone to Kansas wrote Carroll a letter that suggested that Kansas might improve his health so he sold his property and went with his family to Kansas.  Carroll found when he got to Kansas that all settlers had to carry arms to protect themselves and that his friend had been killed.  They returned home through Missouri. When the 1860 Census was taken, "Carrol" owned personal property valued at $450.
