According to birth and marriage records of his children, Andres came from the village of Artenara (referred to in the records as "Artenava") on the northwest of the island of Gran Canarias in the Canary Islands. Artenara is on the opposite side of Gran Canaria from Aguimes, where the Aleman family originated.
Canary Island immigrants to Louisiana were known as "Isleños", Spanish for "islander". In August of 1777, the Spanish crown ordered a new battalion to be formed in Louisiana to help thwart the British threat which developed because of the American War of Independence. 700 men and their families were recruited from the Canary Islands for this venture, with the implied goal of settlement in Louisiana. Andres and his family, eager to escape the harsh conditions of the Canaries, came to Louisiana via Cuba on the ship "La Victoria", embarking on October 22, 1778. Andres and his family settled in the Isleños town of Valenzuela in Assumption Parish.
Andres was First Sergeant of the militia-Brenadiers.
