| In the 1900 census of Creek Twp, DeWitt Co., IL, Richard, 31 (b. Nov 1868) was living with wife Olla, 29 (b. Jan 1871) and childran Yanora?, 5 (b. Dec 1894) and son D????, 4 (b. Dec 1895). Richard and Olla had been married 9 years. Olla was the mother of four children, two still living. (pg155) In the 1930 census of Creek Twp, DeWitt Co., IL, Richard, 61, is living with his cousin Claude Day, 57. Richard is listed as being married for 22 years. Richard is a contract carpenter, and Claude a general laborer. According to the DeWitt County Coroner's Inquest Files, Richard died from a fractured skull received in a fall down a flight of stairs. Clinton Public DeWitt County, Illinois Friday, December 21, 1888 A DUEL WITH KNIVES. Out in the village of Lane they had a meeting of a literary society a couple of weeks ago which ended in a duel with blunt jack-knives. Prof. Gray, the school teacher, and Dick Smallwood got into an altercation over some trivial matter, and nothing but ber-lud would satisfy Dick's honor. Both parties went at each other hip and thigh, and by the time they were seperated they looked as if they had been run through a reaper and mower. Smallwood was badly cut about the head and face, and Gray had one hand severely cut. The fight was brought to this city for Justice McHenry to act as umpire, and the trial came off last Saturday. About one-third of the population was in as witnesses or lookers-on. As it was proven that Dick Smallwood was the agressor Justice McHenry fined him $10 and added $50 more for costs. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
