In the 1860 census of Creek Twp, De Witt Co., Gideon, 27, was living with his wife Sarah, 20, sons Joseph, 2, and John D., 1, and "Carl Spainhoward" (probably Henry C. Spainhour, future husband of Gideon's niece, Deborah Smallwood), 17. He was a farmer and owned $2500 worth of real property and $500 worth of personal property. (pg489)
Another of Henry's brothers, Allen, was living with the William Batteston family close by. Thomas Spainhour was living with his new wife Julia in Morgan Co. in the 1860 census.
In the 1870 census of Creek Twp., DeWitt Co., IL, "Guden", 37, is living with wife Sarah, 40, and children Joseph, 12, John D., 10, Emma, 8, Anna, 7, Richard, 2. and "Floid", 3 months. Laura J. Williams, 11, Sarah's daughter, is also living with them. (pg23)
In the 1880 census of Creek Twp, De Witt Co., Gideon, 47, was living with wife Sarah, 48, daughter Emma, 18, daughter Anne, 16, son Richard, 12, son Louis, 10, and a hired man named James Gither(?), 22. They apparently lived next door to Gideon's sister, Elizabeth's, family. (pg116)
Gideon's obituary in the Clinton Public
March 26, 1886
"Gideon P. SMALLWOOD died at his home in Creek township, on last Wednesday, in the 53d year of his age. He was born near Decatur on the 16th of May, 1833, and came to this county more than thirty years ago and settled in Creek township. He was the youngest member of the Smallwood Family. He was a farmer and stock raiser and has been successful in his calling. Mr. Smallwood was a kind father and husband and a generous neighbor, who was ever ready to lend a helping hand. "
