Samuel enlisted as a private in Company I, Eighty-seventh Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry on 15 August 1862 at Carmi, IL for three years of service during the Civil War. He was single, age 20, 5 feet 9 inches tall, had brown hair, and was a farmer, according to the muster roll. He was mustered into service on 22 September 1862. He died of typhoid fever September 7, 1863 while in the Army.
