In 1853, E.L.E is living at 29 Love St. with his father and brother. E.L.E. apparently took over his father's dry goods business. In the 1856 city directory, there is an ad: "Bonnet, E.L.E., dealer in straw & silk goods, ribbons, etc., 69 Canal St." In 1856 to 1861, E.L.E. has moved in with his in-laws, the Bernards, at 44 Love St. and is in the same business. By 1868, E.L.E. is now into millinery at 62 Chartres. He is still living with his father-in-law, Louis Bernard. In 1872, E.L.E. still has his millinery business, but it is not mentioned after this date. He is living with the widow Bernard. In 1875, E.L.E is living at 54 Frenchmen. His son Edward is a clerk and his son Louis B. is listed with no occupation. In 1879, E.L.E., now a clerk, is living at 164 Elysian Fields. His sons, Eugene A. and Joseph E. are also clerks and living with their father. In 1881, E.L.E. is living with his sons Charles and Joseph E. In the 1880 census of New Orleans, Orleans Par., LA, E.L.E., 48, is living with wife Louisa, 42, and children Edward, 20, Eugene, 17, Charles, 12, Rene, 10, Henry, 8, Paul, 6, George, 2, and Louisa, 14. Also living with them is Eleanor Bernard, 62, Louisa's mother. In the 1900 census of New Orleans, Orleans Par., LA, Eugene L., 68 (Feb 1832) is living with sons Edward, 38 (Aug 1861), Eugene, 36 (Feb 1864), and George, 22 (Dec 1877).
