It is unknown when Patrick immigrated to the US, but it was sometime before 1870.  He became a naturalized citizen November 7, 1892.

Patrick seemed to go by Hardy in most censuses, but his children sometimes use Horty.

In the 1880 census of the 1st Ward, Cedar Falls, Black Hawk Co., IA, Patrick Hardy, 45, is living with wife Mary, 28, and children John, 9, Charles, 6, Francis, 4, and Freddi, 2.  Patrick was a laborer born in Ireland.  Mary was born in Mass, John in Missouri, and the rest in Iowa.

In the 1895 Iowa State census the following entries occur: Patrick Hardy, 55, born in Ireland, Mary Hardy, 42, born in Illinois, John Hardy, 23, Born in Black Hawk, Charles Hardy, 21, Black Hawk, Francis Hardy, 17, Black Hawk, and Freddy Hardy, 14, Black Hawk.

In the 1900 census of Cedar Falls City, Ward 1 (pg 66A), Black Hawk Co., IA,Patrick Hardy, 60 (Mar 1840) is living with wife Mary, 48 (Mar 1852), sons John J., 29 (Feb 1871), Charles E., 27 (Oct 1872), Frank, 22 (Aug 1877), and Fredrick, 19 (Jun 1880).  Patrick was born in Ireland, Mary in Illinois, the rest in Iowa.  Patrick and Mary's parents were born in Ireland.  Patrick was a farmer and the boys were farm hands.
