Ambroise left Acadia (now Nova Scotia), Canada, as a young man with his parents during the British Expulsion of 1755. He was exiled to France, where he remained until 1785. He married another Acadian refugee, Marie-Modest Molaison, in Cherbourg. Like most Acadians, however, France did not seem like home and he longed for the New World.
After the Spanish aquired Louisiana from France in 1762, the Spanish government desired to populate the colony in order to thwart British attempts at regaining the territory. In 1785, the Spanish government outfitted seven ships to transport Acadians in France to Louisiana, already dominated by the French culture. Ambroise, Modeste, and their family joined the passengers and crew of the ship "La Ville D'Archangel" on 12-Aug-1785 and returned to the New World, this time to Louisiana.
One officer aboard the Archangel, Felix Gilles-Louis Bernard du Montier, the son of a minor French aristocrat, caught the eye of Ambroise's daughter, Marie-Victorie. By the time the ship reached New Orleans on 3-Dec-1785, Felix decided to remain in Louisiana and marry Victorie. |
