| More information on this family from: "Related Royal Families: DeBurgh, Travis (Travers), Smallwood" by Marilu Burch Smallwood, 1966, Gainesville, FL: "Dean Smallwood who was granted the arms...was Matthew Smallwood D.D., Dean of Litchfield, in Co. Stafford. As his brothers James and John were mentioned in the grant, it was no doubt a confirmation of an old grant-at least the shield must have been. The father of Matthew the Dean was James of Middlewick Co. Chester. He was perhaps nephew of Humphrey, Randall and Edward Smallwood, also of Middlewick. And the next generation were Randall and Matthew, probably sons of Edward. In the next generation came John, Randall, Matthew and James. This last Matthew and Randall were the ones who came to Virginia; Randall Provost Marshall in 1623, Matthew living there in 1632." |
