Louis came to New Orleans from West Baton Rouge Parish after his mother Rosalie sold his father's plantation, sometime after 1833. He is first mentioned in the 1838 city directory, age 28, as first teller for the Improvement Bank. He was living on the corner of St. Anthony and Love Street. In 1842, he was a cashier at the Improvement Bank. By 1850, Louis was first bookkeeper for the State Bank of Louisiana. He remained at the State Bank until his death from a heart attack. The house he had built at 44 Love Street (now Rampart Street) was still standing as of 1985. In 1849, Louis is living at 54 Rampart Street, New Orleans. In 1850, Louis is the First Bookkeeper at the State Bank of LA, living at 11 Love Street. In 1851, Louis has moved to 44 Love Street. In 1855, another Louis Bernard is living with Louis. This Louis is a clerk, working at 17 Conti. This may be the son of Agricole Bernard and Louis' cousin. In the 1850 census of New Orleans, LA, 3rd Municipality, 3rd Ward, Louis, 37, is a clerk with $3700 in property, living with his wife Eleonore, 37, mother "Rosaria," 56, Alfred Landry, 18 (possibly a nephew of his wife's), A. Bernard, 23, Edgard Bernard, 21, A. Hilesl?, 36, and a 30-something year old woman. Felix Edgard Bernard was Louis' first cousin, son of his uncle Onesiphore Bernard. "A. Bernard" was Ange Alphonse Bernard, another of his Uncle Onesiphore's children. While his brothers Gilbert and Felix use the name Bernard for official business (such as birth records), Louis used Dumontier. On the birth record for Louisa, he is "Louis Bernard Dumontier". No other birth record could be found. Therefore, Louisa was probably his only child. Godparents for his Baptism: Felix Bernard and Victorie DeLatre An obituary notice in the Picayune, May 2, 1869, tells of Louis Bernard's "sudden death" at his residence on Saturday afternoon, 396 Rampart. Friends "of his son-in-law E.L.E. Bonnet and the Bernard and Martinez families are invited to the funeral." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
