In the 1840 census, James M. Smallwood was living with a woman aged 20-30 (Ivy, his wife).
In the 1850 census of Macon Co., IL, James, 36, is living with wife Ivy, 35, and daughter Juliet, 8. James had land valued at $1500 and was a blacksmith.
In the affidavit of his brother, Joseph P. Smallwood, filed 16-Jul-1906 and sworn 6-Oct-1896, the following is said of James M. Smallwood:
"This affidavit further states that the said James M. Smallwood, son of the said Parmenious Smallwood departed this life on or about the 5th day of June 1852 intestate, leaving no last will and testament and leaving him surviving his widow whose first name this affidavit does not now remember, and Joseph B. Smallwood and Julia A. E. Smallwood as his children andn sole heirs at law, that the said widow of the said James M. Smallwood departed this life many years ago and the said Julia A. E. Smallwood became and now is the wife of Jesse LeForgee of Decatur, Illinois." |
