Samuel helped his brothers George and Daniel run their father's saw and grist mill after 1835.
In the 1840 census of De Witt Co., Samuel was living with a woman in the same age group (20 to 30). Since he didn't marry Frances until 1844, this was either a first wife or one of his sisters.
In the 1850 census of DeWitt Co., IL, "S. Smallwood", 38, was living with wife Frances, 27, son Gerome, 5, and daughter Ann, 3.
In the 1860 census of Macon Co., IL, "Sam Smallwood" is living at least with his son "Jerome Smallwood" (I don't have the image). |
